In case you guys and gals forgot why you had no Greatgrandfather or Grandfather(for the older ones of you), today marks the 95th anniversary of the beginning of World War I. ...too bad I don´t dig this layout stuff for txts, so no poem by Wystan H. Auden(+1916 at the Somme), but a pic of the belgian commander-in-chief, S.M. Albert I., Roi des Belges.

There are those who believe that the horrors of WWI seriously traumatized the spirit of Europeans. IDK, but it makes sense to me. Of course the evils of each generation can have roots in the previous ones.

My Great Uncle Thomas was in the trenches at Ypres. He survived,came back to NZ, married Edna and had three sons. He was my Dad's Mother's oldest brother.
Years later Edna's niece, Jenny, married my Mother's first cousin, Philip. Doubly related!
Philip's Father, my Great Uncle Fred, and Fred's next up Brother, Great Uncle Walter, were both soldiers over in Europe during WWII. Walter and Fred were the younger brothers of my Mum's Father.
It all reaches so far across our World, even now....

Switzerland was shocked when Germany cold-bloodedly violated Belgium's neutrality. Luckily, Germany restrained from doing so against Switzerland and my forefathers only had to secure our borders.
The violation of Belgium's neutrality was indeed not a wise decision, but besides that, John is completely right IMO, it was the most stupid war, caused from all sides, without reason, without sense, but with terrible consequences and a big disastrous lie at its end.
You forget to ask a question, dear Pilgrim, if I see it right, but I can name my great-grandfathers, they all survived WWI (great, isn’t it, but nevertheless nearly the half of my maternal family become extinct from WWII), their names are: Waldemar Wisser, Anton Treimer, Johann Wienhold and John Siedler, the last one was a fisherman and therefore my family expelled my great-grandmother for her decision to marry a poor man, he got lost at sea. That’s all I can tell.
Especially since it was declared 28th August 1914 by Austria-Hungaria to Serbia.

They were getting caught in a net of alliances, so it was sufficient that one domino fall, wrong picture, but sadly the truth.

Don't find a link from a nationalist John Siedler (the one who was a poor fisherman),the whole family was from Danzig, former Prussia (my next comment is in German I promise).
